The risk of cardiovascular issues and Alzheimer’s disease might be reduced by 30 percent, while dementia risk could drop by 10 percent with an intake of around 300 grams of seafood each week, a study has indicated regarding its advantages.

An increase in seafood intake has also been associated with better mental health results, as adults who incorporate regular servings weekly experience a diminished risk of anxiety and depression.

Having fish just twice a week can provide substantial advantages for every bodily system, stated epidemiologist Alexandra McManus from Curtin University.

It’s fundamentally about maintaining health throughout our lives. 

Researchers emphasize that at least one serving should contain a sufficient amount of Omega-3 fatty acids, and they also suggest incorporating a variety of seafood due to its numerous health benefits. 

While various Omega-3 supplements exist in the market that offer significant health advantages, consuming whole seafood encompasses even more benefits, McManus remarked.

Seafood is a superb source of lean protein and provides essential nutrients like vitamins A and D, B vitamins, iodine, zinc, selenium, and iron. 

For older individuals, regular seafood consumption can bolster bone health and enhance muscle power.

If you aim for around four offerings of seafood weekly, you can sustain your muscle strength and overall functioning, McManus mentioned.

When you possess adequate muscle strength and function, your risk of falling decreases, she added.

Omega-3 fatty acids aid in decreasing inflammation, allergies, and asthma, while promoting healthy blood vessel function and sustaining brain integrity.

There are also advantages for prevalent health issues that are increasingly common, such as diabetes, mental and behavioral health concerns, and cancer, according to McManus.

During pregnancy, consuming seafood may lower the chances of premature birth and low birth weight, while promoting the mother’s overall well-being.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also vital for the brain development of the fetus and infants.

Emerging research suggests that elevated doses of Omega-3s might also benefit seriously ill patients in hospitals by safeguarding them against infections and decreasing their hospital stay duration, McManus reported.

The study—representing the largest independent assessment of seafood's impact on human health in the last ten years, reviewing over 250 scientific investigations—has helped experts enhance their comprehension of appropriate seafood consumption and the types recommended.

Initially, it was simply about increasing fish intake, while now it’s about incorporating more seafood as a component of a balanced diet, McManus concluded.
